Let's Talk About Book Reviews
I woke up the other day thinking about the book I just finished. If you know me, you might’ve heard that I read every night before I go to bed. Every night without fail because my love of reading is greater than my need for sleep. (That’s totally dependent on whether I take Advil PM)
I’m not a fast reader, mind you, and that’s likely because I often fall asleep with my Kindle propped up. On a good night, it won’t hit me in the face. Good nights are rare. The next night, I usually have to go back to reread what I missed, so I tend to backtrack a lot. Because of that and probably a dozen other things, I only read one to two books a week. Max. Like I said, not fast.
Now for why the title mentions book reviews:
As a rule, I always leave a rating on Goodreads – my Kindle account is linked to Goodreads – but rarely do I ever write a review. I know why I don’t, but my reason isn’t sitting well with me.
Why don’t I write them? Well, I’ll tell you.
*takes deep breath*
I’m always worried I might offend a fellow author.
There. I said it.
Right or wrong, it sounds like an excuse and as of late, I’ve been upset that I keep so much to myself because I worry about offending others. Never mind the fact there are probably like zero authors who would think twice about what I have to say about their book.
Doesn’t really change anything because that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’m the person who wants to send out a newsletter because I’ve got a few things to let you know about, but I’m worried you’re overwhelmed with email and you’ll get upset with me. So I err on the side of caution and don’t send it. Then I lose the opportunity to tell you what’s going on. Maybe you wanted to know. I mean, you can handle your email on your own, right? You don’t need me to make that decision for you. That’s what unsubscribe is for.
Anyway…
The point of all this rambling is to publicly note (my roundabout way of holding myself accountable) that I’ve decided to start writing reviews. Right here on my blog because this is my safe space. I can say what I feel. After all, it’s not fair of me to hope you’ll write reviews about my books if I’m not returning the favor to my fellow author. Good or bad, reviews are what sell books because they get the word out.
With that said, I promise I will never, ever, EVER attack anyone in a review. My reviews are only about the book, not the author. And I will always be honest about my thoughts.
And one last thing to note: I only read books for pleasure. Meaning, you shouldn’t ask me to read your book because I only read what I’m in the mood for, and I can tell you, my moods change faster than the TV channels when my husband has the remote. Now if you have a suggestion on something you think I should read, that’s a different story. I’m always open to suggestions.
With that said, check out my rating system and if you’re in the mood, respond to this post and tell me:

1. 95% of the time I leave a review. It’s mainly to help me keep track of what I read. Lord knows, I’ve gotten a book more than once because it sounds good.
There are times I won’t, but that’s only because no one needs to know I actually read that…. 😶
Hey Nicole, I’m three months late reading your post… I read every one, it just takes me a while to get to them sometimes.
I related to everything you said! I’m a new author (which is even tough to reveal since you’re in my top 3 authors of all time) and I fret about everything I write and not just books – social media posts, newsletters, reviews, this comment… But like you, I love reading and never go a day without doing it, and I understand how important reviews are. I read on Kobo and I could just leave a rating, but so often I don’t because I never want to leave less than 5 stars. I write some reviews on BookBub, but usually only the last in a series because I worry that it’s dumb if I leave a review for every book and my reviews aren’t good enough. Anxiety is a b!tch, huh?!
I think your idea of posting reviews on your blog is a fantastic and I’ll look forward to reading them. 💜
Congrats on being a new author. I can attest that it’s a wonderful journey. And yes, anxiety is a b!tch LOL Good luck with all your endeavors!
