You don’t fall for your brother’s high school sweetheart, your boss’s daughter, or your ex-wife’s best friend. Especially when they’re all the same woman.
Under Brick Callan’s mile-wide chest beats a loyal heart with a few cracks in it. He’s the steadfast, overprotective type. Especially when it comes to the one woman he can never have. It’s a long, complicated history punctuated by fights, friendship, family, and an attraction that strains his iron willpower.
When Remi Ford returns to Mackinac Island in the dead of winter with a secret, Brick makes it his mission to find out what put the shadows in those green eyes. Even if it means breaking down the walls he’s built between them. Even if it means falling for the one girl he’ll never get over.
The free-spirited artist just needs to lay low for a few weeks so she can figure a way out of this nightmare. She’s definitely not staying. Not when the man who broke her teenage heart into splinters keeps showing up at her parents’ dinner table. Remi doesn’t need broody, bearded Brick riding to her rescue…again. Not when it will put them both in danger, costing them much more than their hearts.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE STORY FOR ME
The slow-burn, steamy build-up between Brick and Remi.
The author mastered the art of the slow burn in this one. I could almost feel the heat churning between the two of them.
Lucy Score is another new-to-me author. I jumped into Forever Never having read the blurb, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. Turns out, I found a new go-to author.
The naughty rating…
Oh, boy. Where do I start? This book was absolutely filthy in the best possible way. The encounters between Brick and Remi were so hot I was surprised my Kindle wasn’t smoking.
But there was a lot more to this book than the panty-melting sex scenes.
Romantic suspense…
When I read there was a suspense element to this romance, I jumped right in. With that said, if you’re a die-hard suspense junkie like me, you might be a bit disappointed. There’s a delicate balance when it comes to romance and suspense, but this book weighed more on one than the other.
The actual suspense, while interesting, bookends the story. We are given a few nuggets of information at first, some scattered sprinkles of more throughout, and then the story is tied up with a fairly predictable plot. I enjoyed the suspense but I wished there had been more of it.
“Who, Remi? Who are you afraid of?” Fuck temporary promises. If there was a man out there who scared her, he wouldn’t rest until the scales were balanced.
My thoughts…
I fell in love with Remi and Brick immediately. I could feel their connection from the very first chapter. I love Brick because he’s brooding, solid, and dependable; Remi because she’s sassy, caring, and vulnerable. They complement one another in a way that is refreshing.
But…
I know, I know. If I stopped there, it would easily be 5 stars, right?
But there is a lot going on in this story. A lot of mini storylines like Remi’s sister and her marriage issues, various incidents with other residents of the small town, and a lot of flashbacks to earlier years for both of them–some provide depth to the characters, and some just add filler to already understood subjects. There is also the Dominant/submissive aspect of the sex that becomes the main focus and an imagined point of contention.
Then there’s the inevitable breakup because they are worried they want something the other one doesn’t. To solve this, Remi decides they need to date each other and take sex off the table. One step forward, two steps back.
I wanted to skip through a few times because some scenes felt unimportant to Brick and Remi’s story, and some of the sex got a little repetitive, but I held on because I was worried I would miss something important. While I enjoyed getting to know the side characters, I felt like their issues took me out of the main story.
To sum it up…
This book would’ve been five stars for me if I could’ve stayed engaged the entire time. It was very long because of the slow build between grown-up Remi and grown-up Brick. That was my absolute favorite part of this book, but I keep wanting to equate it to a very long prologue because the actual story seemed to start after they finally got together. At the point when I thought I was nearing the end, I realized I wasn’t even close.
I highly recommend that you jump into this one sooner rather than later.
